Getting Close to Opening!

Yes, things are coming together and the Sahyun Library is getting very close to opening.  Behold!

Oooops, something is missing!  But well, they work.  Partition order has been delayed.

Here's John Woodward with his pair of drinking fountains.  What a welcome addition they are!

These are two of the new computers and chairs just needing someone to start using them to find ancestors.

Mary Marsh is looking to buy some books from the beautiful new book nook.

And the garden is set to start growing.  All is ready!

Nearing Completion of Construction

We are nearing completion of construction just in time for the October 2 Grand Opening.

Soon we will have an air conditioned library. 

Preparation for final painting is being completed.

Tiling of the old and new entries will be complete by Friday, September 23 as will the paver installation outside.

Construction is Proceeding with Equipment and Furnishings Arriving Daily

Construction is proceeding at the library and 

equipment is arriving daily. 

Four new lateral files were installed and the Surname Files and Locality Files are now located there.

Drywall installation is now complete and taping is now taking place in preparation for painting in the new storeroom.

Paver installation is continuing in the front entrance. The masons have done a lot of work in the patio also.

Lateral files and steel shelves have been moved into the new storeroom.

The new tables have arrived and are in use by two of our librarians, Emily and Kathie.

The new tables have power outlets in the top. Patrons can bring their laptop computers and get "plugged in."

Not Such a Busy Week at the Sahyun Library

The past week started out with a flurry of plumbing activity, then dropped off to zero while the heat/air conditioning boys attended a conference about HVAC.  Before Jim Friestad went to Wisconsin for a few days to a wedding, he unwrapped and set up five new PCs.  Latitude 34 set them up ready for use.  We also took delivery of two "lateral files" that will contain our surname files.  The book cases are completed, so mornings might find members like Carri Thomas shelving and reshelving books and periodicals.  On Friday, a crew showed up to clear the steel book shelves out of the old periodical room in preparation for its painting and carpeting.

Three of our new computers sit on our new computer counter that sit on our new carpet in the new wing of the Sahyun Library.

These files were already stuffed with surname files a few days after they were delivered.

While waiting for something to happen, Bob Lynn and John Fritsche took it upon themselves to clean up the Glass House, site of much of the bookcase work.  Thanks, guys!  (Bob Lynn photo)

It's a Busy Week at the Sahyun Library

This is an exceptionally busy week at the Sahyun, and it is not over yet.  The biggest event was the carpet laying in the new wing, and what a difference the new carpet makes on the entire outlook and feel of the library!  The plumbers, electricians, sidewalk pavers, and HVAC workers were also hard at work renovating the old wing.  Here is a small sample of all those activities.

The research area of the new wing is almost covered after 3 hours of concentrated effort.

At the end of two days, carpet has been lain through the new addition.

Stan Zalatel nails kick plates to the bottom of each book case bay.  Note the accumulated dust on the bottom shelf.  The entire library will have to be dusted before we can think of using it.

Renovating the Old and Finishing Touches on the New

It is now August and the old wing is being renovated, the hardscape in the garden is a-building, and the finishing touches are going into the book cases and computer counters.

Here is our new courtyard!

Dry wall paneling will be placed on the aluminum ribs in the multi-purpose room.

Doors have been hung between several rooms.

YOU could be sitting in that chair and working on your genealogy among the new bookcases once the library is completed, and that won't be long now.

Golden Spike

Today, Jim Friestad drove the final nail, dubbed "The Golden Spike", into the crown molding on a book case to signify the completion of the book case project!  Jim gave all the honor to his 38 volunteers who put in some 2600 total hours on the project.  What an accomplishment!  Congratulations to Jim and all the volunteers!


Construction progress was largely underground, where sewer and drain pipes were emplaced, inspected, and are now covered by concrete.    The pavers finally arrived last week so that walkway masonry could resume in the garden.  Lastly, tree trimmers thinned out the big pine trees so that they wouldn't fall into the parking lot.

 

Jim was justifiably pleased and proud  to pound in the last nail.

But Jim didn't drive it all the way.  He left a little for Bob Lynn  to tap the rest of the way.

The walkway is coming along nicely.

Now we can see the mountains.
