It took nearly eight months, but it finally happened: Our fire suppression system was hooked up to the City water main in Castillo Street. It took that long to obtain the necessary permits from the City and from Caltrans. Scheduling the actual work took only a week. The work itself was spread out over 5 days, but now the last remaining major project is completed, so that a number of things can be done: activate our fire alarm, install a security system throughout the remainder of the library, install rain gutters and hook them up to our drainage system, which was installed throughout the property but the drainage pipes out to the street had to wait until the fire system hookup work was done.
All the periodicals were taken out and stored in one of our storage units, the steel shelves were taken out and stored in the back yard, the walls were patched, painted, and the floor was carpeted. A small meeting had to be held in the room, and a couple members said that room is too nice to be a storeroom. A crack crew of volunteers reassembled the shelves and attached them to the walls. So now we have a nice storeroom.

Today, the roofers finished tiling the awnings over the old doors in the old wing, thus completing that part of the construction. The awnings, or "eyebrows" as they may be called, add a touch of class to the old wing and bring it into conformity with the new wing.
Jim Friestad, Martin Peterson, Stan Zalatel, Mac McMillin, and Art Sylvester added more volunteer hours to bookcase construction this week with the manufacturing and emplacement of seismic bracing in the new stack room.
And finally this week, new light fixtures were installed in the Ladies' bathroom. Partitions won't be far behind we hope.
These details include a trash enclosure, an awing over the old entry way, and an awning ("eyebrow") over the rear window and door of the old wing. Expect that the construction will be completed this week, at the rate Bruce and Carlos are going, and that the roofer can come soon afterward, followed then by the painter.
These have been slow days for construction at the Sahyun Library, owing to the nonchalance of some equipment suppliers, and the permit stalling. Thus, the partitions for the women's bath finally came - but they are the wrong color. New windows for he old wing were supposed to be delivered at the beginning of the week, but that probably won't happen until after Thanksgiving. And after hoping and trying to trench the street this past summer, we still have no action from Caltrans about if and when it will approve a permit for us to connect our fire suppression system into the Castillo Street water main. So with little else to do, Jim Friestad and Art Sylvester squirreled away a time capsule that commemorates the bookcase building team members. Here it is during construction and then in completed form:
Before Jim Friestad went to Wisconsin for a few days to a wedding, he unwrapped and set up five new PCs. Latitude 34 set them up ready for use. We also took delivery of two "lateral files" that will contain our surname files. The book cases are completed, so mornings might find members like Carri Thomas shelving and reshelving books and periodicals. On Friday, a crew showed up to clear the steel book shelves out of the old periodical room in preparation for its painting and carpeting.
Jim gave all the honor to his 38 volunteers who put in some 2600 total hours on the project. What an accomplishment! Congratulations to Jim and all the volunteers!

Construction progress was largely underground, where sewer and drain pipes were emplaced, inspected, and are now covered by concrete. The pavers finally arrived last week so that walkway masonry could resume in the garden. Lastly, tree trimmers thinned out the big pine trees so that they wouldn't fall into the parking lot.
The entryway desk and book sales cabinet have been varnished and look real fine. Books are being shifted from their temporary emplacements to where they will probably reside permanently. And the computer counter is close to being finished. Renovation of the old wing has been stalled a little by the search for the sewer line, which turned out not to be where the plans said it should have been, but the electrical work has gone into high gear again.
